A Queensland lawyer advocating for the rights of the LGBTIQ + legal community won the 2020 Australian Young Lawyer Award.
Dean Clifford-Jones founded Pride in Law in 2017, which advocates tolerance and equality across the legal profession.
Mr. Clifford-Jones has grown the organization into a national LGBTIQ + Law Association, running workshops and providing training that will help transform practices across the country.
"What makes Dean's accomplishments even more remarkable is that he founded Pride in Law while also serving the demanding role of principal attorney in the Queensland Director's Office for Child Protection Disputes," said Pauline Wright, President of the Law Council of Australia.
“Pride in Law is and will remain the only LGBTIQ + legal body in Australia. What Dean has achieved is truly historic and is helping to break down barriers across Australia.
“While we pride ourselves on being an inclusive profession, many of us have faced discrimination and harassment.
"I applaud the efforts of Dean and younger members of our profession who have chosen to stand against prejudice and prejudice, celebrate diversity, and usher in a more inclusive and accepting era."
The joint winners of the Australian Young Lawyer Organization Award were also announced today. The NSW Young Lawyers Human Rights Committee has been recognized for its "Fighting Sexual Harassment in Australian Legal Workplaces" program, which develops strategies that transform legal workplaces, and organizes workshops and training courses.
The co-winner, the Law Institute of Victoria's Young Lawyers, was selected for its "Physically Remote, Professionally Close: How to Thrive in a Virtual World" program launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has developed a series of online workshops that cover various aspects of legal practice, development and training, including managing stress and resilience. There was also a workshop where trans and gender lawyers and students shared their experiences.
